We have ROOF!

Or, really, lack of.  The roof work was started today.  Even with just the decking stripped it looks better than with that awful roof.

That's all.  Just wanted to share the awesomeness.

The forgotten part of the house

I forgot to post this really cool looking cabinet that's built in, in the basement.  I would so take this with me if I could!!  Don't mind the wire, that's gone now.

Oh, and this great door too.  Check out the latch!!

A little progress

With the holidays and a visit from out of town family, not much has been happening around the Bungalow lately.  The fridge bump out/closet did get framed up though.  I've been kicking around the idea of using two of the doors from the built in for doors on the top part where the fridge will go, since a refrigerator is only 70 or so inches tall.  But then do I put shelves below?  Or just drywall?  Of just drywall, will the doors look out of place?

Hm.

New windows! And a new project?

Windows are being replaced!  It looks much better on the outside, so much cleaner!  Here are some inside photos to get started.  Pardon the mess!

As for the new project...well...not really.  I did go look at it.  This house and I have a history-I looked at in back in 2002 when it was a forclosure.  It's been bought and sold a couple times since-the timing and money have never aligned for me to buy it.  And again, the timing is wrong.  It's a LARGE brick vernacular farmhouse.  A TRUE brick house, with no wall studs on the outer walls.  3,000 sq ft of uninsulated house.  Now I know one reason it's been for sale so much.  The other...well...they say a picture is worth a 1,000 words.  First, there are some good things-like the amazing trim and radiators.  However, there are a number of bad ones too, like the spalled brick and wavy wonky foundation.  Without further ado, I introduce you to the house that has haunted me for about 15 years.

Boring stuff

Today was boring stuff the future owners probably won't think about much or really consider.  But I guess that's the point-because if it wasn't there, they WOULD think about it.

I put up some insulation in the dining room bump out (walls and roof) and in the ceiling space of the half bath downstairs.  I have more to do upstairs, but with an impending cold snap I wanted to at least get this in.

So here it is.  Insulation.

Living room lights

Took down one of the temporary living room lights and put up one of the permanent ones.  The temporary lights are actually the closet lights, but they worked as lighting as I went through the rooms.  I have them in the peach (downstairs) bedroom and dining room right now too,

Originally I had a different light picked out but I decided on these.  I'm not totally sold on tea stained shades yet, but I like the look.

So here is the big reveal!

What the...what?! Or, things that make you go hmmm

So this weekend, my contractor stopped by and we got to talking siding.  I decided the house just needed it, although I didn't want to spend the extra money.  The thing is, in the end, when I had over the keys, I want them to be to a move in ready great house that hopefully will now be kept up.

So, I've been thinking about siding since I heard my offer was accepted.  I finally gave in to the white as I said earlier.  Now though, should I go with the standard 4 over 4 (4" revel) clapboards or shakes?  I have been pretty sure it had shake since the beginning.  The historian thought so as well.  The neighbor couldn't remember.  I swore I saw the revel of them below the current siding.  I hemmed and hawed.

My contractor agreed, he thought it was shake under that white siding.  I had an inspiration.  I was going to do siding, right?  Right.  So, then take off one of the pieces of white siding and and see what was there-color and all!  My contractor climbed up and we awaited the long debated color and style issue being resolved.

Off came the white.  Then...what the...what??  Is that...yup.

Here's what I waited all that time for.

Um, yeah.  That did NOT help.

So it also snowed, this is the neighbors yard

The house has blown in.  When they did it, it filled up this electric box

I got light in the living room-yay!!

I removed more dining room floor
